National Georgia Day
Some of my favorite people hail from or moved to the Peach State. That’s why I chose to focus on National Georgia Day. There’s some great history in Georgia as well.
Georgia is known for its peaches. For haunted Savannah. It’s home to the oldest state park in the nation. It’s also home to the largest single mass of granite known as Stone Mountain. Those are just a few things that the great state of Georgia is known for.
Back in 2017 National Calendar Day decided to start recognizing each state in the order they entered the union. Being that Georgia was the fourth state to enter the Union, that put #NationalGeorgiaDay at the top of the list.
A little Georgia History
On January 2, 1788, Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe. He settled the colony’s FIRST capital, Savannah. The state would go on to have four more capitals! And my husband says I’m indecisive! After Savannah there werAugusta, Louisville, Milledgeville and then finally, Atlanta.
Georgia initially prohibited slavery in the state in 1735. That prohibitian ended fifteen years later.
Georgia is also home to Coca-Cola and boiled peanuts (insert YUCK face here). Sorry, we can’t all agree on what is tasty. doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate National Georgia Day though.
Some other days to celebrate today:
- National Watermelon Day
- National Grab Some Nuts Day (almonds and the like)
If you missed it, you can find yesterday’s National Day right here.
