National School Picture Day
Every child in America either is over the moon or absolutely dreading National School Picture Day. I always dreaded it. Either my clothes were never right, I sported a really bad hair day, or had some volcanic growth on my face! Now that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I think we all know that it seemed that way for those of us who dreaded or still dread picture day.
These kids are adorable, but they just weren’t feeling it…..well may he was!

#NationalSchoolPictureDay
National School Picture Day is celebrated each year on the second Thursday of September. Since this day is really for our parents and family, we really should be putting on our best smiles. We are creating memories that will last a lifetime. Although, I’m sure some of us would rather forget them. They are essentially a thumbnail of time in our cute and toothless years as well as our awkward teenage angst years. I don’t know about you, but my husband STILL laughs at one of my photos, and I at his. It’s because we love each other and feel that we truly must mock one another to show it.
How school pictures have changed over the decades
Besides the obvious changes like hair and outfits, there have been other changes as well. The earliest school pictures my search produced was from 1890. Much like the pictures all the way through to the early 80’s of elementary school, they were done as a whole class. There were no individual photos taken back then or even up through the 30s and 40s. Parents also didn’t get a copy of class pictures in the early days (correct me if I’m wrong). They were generally for hanging up through the years at the schoolhouse. Not until the 50s were individual pictures taken and offered to parents for keepsakes.
Although research unveiled zilch, we can still talk about the different things that have been added over the years. From a collective class photo to individual ones, years books, photo packages, keychains, mousepads, and digital copies only, it really seems that the possibilities are endless. Especially once you get into digital copies. Now you can put them on a mug or a blanket!
Lifetouch seems to have a monopoly on school pictures. I’m sure that we all have a local company available to us, but Lifetouch is internationally known.
How to observe National School Picture Day
Do what we all do best. Since it’s celebrated on the second THURSDAY of September, what better way than digging them out and sharing them on social media…..as in TBT on FB or any other page you’re on. Be sure to use #NationalSchoolPictureDay when you post them!
