National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day
National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day. A day created to remind me how lucky I am. Lucky to have a fantastic friend who loves to shop. Did I mention that she’s easily bored?? The best part of all of this is that she is the same size as me!
We are a nation who once searched for all the best deals at flea markets and yard sales. Ever since the popularity of the internet came along those deals fell to the wayside. Suddenly people knew what they had and what it was worth. Then nobody got a deal on anything anymore. All that seems to be changing again though. It’s almost as if things have come full-circle and now it’s about purging again. Don’t get me wrong, there are still folks out there who won’t give a deal to their own mother. Those people are few. Most are willing to give a deal just to get rid of it.
In the event that you don’t have a wonderful friend who likes to give you their cast-offs, then go to your local Goodwill. We have an amazing local thrift store that sells everything from silverwear to armoires and everything in between. National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day doesn’t have to be just clothing. If you find a great deal, don’t pass it up!

Here’s something that I love to do in order to justify my new finds. I periodically go through my closet and cupboards for items I no longer like, need, or use. I package them up, bring them to the back door of the thrift shop and head in to the front door to purchase new-to-me goodies. Don’t judge me, but I also “shop” at the local dump. You read that right. We have an oversized shed that people place second-hand items in to give away instead of trying to make a profit. It’s a great concept actually. I’ve taken home pottery, books, brand new clothing, dishes, bicycle and even lightbulbs from the “Dump Store”!
Stop buying new!
When I was younger, I can remember always wanting the latest fashion and practically believing I’d ACTUALLY die without them! The older I got, the more I realized that the practicality of clothing far outweighed the trendiness. Do I still buy new clothing? Yes, but not very often. Many of my clothes are classic style and seem to live on forever. Or perhaps I’m that “old” person who doesn’t realize that I’m not in style anymore. Either way, I’m okay with it! Help the planet out and buy yourself some gently used clothing.
There are numerous other benefits of shopping second-hand besides helping the planet. You There’s the savings, as you pay only a fraction of the price. You will more than likely find deals for the whole family as well as household goods. By shopping in these thrift stores you also help the community. These stores typically employ locals who depend on your purchases to cover their pay. There’s also the folks serving community service (at least at our local shop) and the volunteers who just want to help aid the community. Click here to find out how to donate to your local Goodwill. Don’t have a local Goodwill? Here’s a list of local thrift shops by state. It’s not all-inclusive, but it’s a start.
